Old Port Crane

The Old Port Crane in Gdańsk stands along the Motława River, instantly recognizable by its towering, wooden midsection wedged between two massive brick towers. Built between fourteen forty-two and fourteen forty-four, the structure functioned as both a defensive city gate and a heavy-duty port hoist. Its silhouette, with the wooden hoisting mechanism projecting toward the water, marks it as the largest and oldest surviving medieval harbor crane in Europe.
