Podmurze

Podmurze is marked by a surviving medieval defensive tower that stands in the heart of the city. This stone structure, known as the Na Podmurze Tower, dates back to the fourteenth century and remains as one of the few remnants of the original fortifications that once enclosed the Main Town of Gdańsk. Its name refers to its location near the base of the old city walls, which were part of a larger, complex defensive system built to protect the wealthy merchant city during its time as a key member of the Hanseatic League.
