The Roman Baths

The Roman Baths sit below the modern street level, recognizable by the steaming, green-tinted water of the Great Bath which is open to the sky. This ancient bathing complex, constructed around seventy AD, was built around natural geothermal springs that produce over one million liters of hot mineral water every day. The Romans dedicated this site to the goddess Sulis Minerva, and it developed into a major religious and social center for the town they called Aquae Sulis.
