Upper Borough Walls

other

Upper Borough Walls follows the path of the medieval defensive circuit that once enclosed Bath. While most of the city’s stone walls and gatehouses were pulled down during the eighteenth century to allow the town to expand, this street retains the name and the general route of the northern rampart. A small section of the medieval structure still stands here near Trim Street, surviving because it bordered a burial ground used by the nearby hospital between seventeen thirty-six and eighteen forty-nine.
