The EASTGATE

The Eastgate sits tucked away on Boat Stall Lane, recognizable by a narrow, weathered limestone arch that remains several meters below the current street level. This structure is the only surviving medieval gate of the city, standing as a quiet relic of the time when Bath was a fortified walled town. While the north, west, and south gates were dismantled during the city's massive eighteenth-century expansion, this small postern gate escaped destruction, likely due to its minor role as a secondary entrance toward the river.
