Gay Street

Gay Street rises steeply between the open ground of Queen Square and the stone circle of The Circus. Designed by the architect John Wood the Elder and finished by his son in the mid-eighteenth century, the road features a series of three-story Georgian townhouses that step upward with the incline. You can identify the buildings by their uniform stone fronts, classic ionic columns, and mansard roofs, all of which maintain the formal style of the city’s grandest residential developments.
