The Grand Opera House is immediately identifiable by its intricate, oriental-style auditorium, which remains the finest surviving example of this architectural theme in the United Kingdom. Designed by the prolific theatre architect Frank Matcham, the building opened on December twenty-third, eighteen ninety-five, at the request of founder Joseph F. Warden. It was created to reflect the prosperity and confidence of late Victorian Belfast, with its ornate plasterwork and distinctive style intended to transport patrons into a world of theatrical extravagance.
