The Hanseatic Museum and Schøtstuene are identified by the narrow, historic wooden buildings of the Bryggen wharf, where German merchants once dominated the northern stockfish trade for nearly four centuries. Established in thirteen-fifty, this German trading office functioned as a largely independent colony, where up to two thousand merchants operated under their own laws and spoke Low German.
