Cumberland House is an orange-red brick mansion on King's Staith, instantly recognizable by its riverside location and a design adapted to survive the floods of the River Ouse. Built around seventeen ten for William Cornwell, a former sheriff and twice Lord Mayor of York, the structure features a raised ground floor and a limestone basement specifically engineered to allow floodwaters to pass through without damaging the main living levels.
