St William's College is recognizable by the stone ground floor and the jettied, timber-framed upper story that leans out over the street. Built starting in fourteen sixty-five, the structure was created to house twenty-three chantry priests who served at York Minster. These fellows had developed a reputation for drunkenness that embarrassed the Archbishop of York, leading him to commission this residence to keep them under closer supervision.
