Constantine the Great

A bronze figure of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great sits upon a stone throne in Minster Yard, just outside York Minster. Created by the sculptor Philip Jackson and unveiled in nineteen ninety-eight, this seated statue depicts the emperor in military dress with a broken sword in his left hand. The broken blade is shaped to form a cross, a design element intended to represent his eventual embrace of Christianity.
