Bootham Bar

Bootham Bar is a narrow stone gatehouse that serves as one of the four main medieval entrances through the city walls of York. Its most striking feature is the central stone archway, which frames the towers of York Minster when viewed from the street. The structure sits directly atop the site of a Roman gate that once controlled the northwestern entrance to the ancient fortress of Eboracum. While the oldest masonry in the archway dates to the eleventh century, the majority of the tower visible today was constructed or heavily modified between the fourteenth and nineteenth centuries.
