York Mansion House

The York Mansion House is a striking Georgian building in St Helen’s Square, recognizable by its elegant, symmetrical facade that has stood as the official residence of the city’s Lord Mayor since seventeen thirty-two. It holds the distinction of being the oldest purpose-built house of its kind in England, constructed decades before its counterpart in London. The building originated from a practical necessity: eighteenth-century Lord Mayors were expected to entertain citizens, but many were reluctant to open their private homes for these duties. To solve this, the city council authorized the project in seventeen twenty-five, commissioning a venue where the city could host guests and store its valuable records and regalia.
