The King's Manor is an orange-brown brick building distinguished by its tall chimneys and an ornate royal coat of arms carved above the main entrance. Originally built between fourteen eighty-three and fifteen oh-two, it served as the residence for the abbots of Saint Mary’s Abbey. Following the dissolution of the monasteries in fifteen thirty-nine, the Crown seized the site to establish it as the headquarters for the Council of the North, a body created to administer royal justice in the region.
