Fairfax House

Fairfax House on Castlegate displays an orange-brick front with pale-stone dressings, standing out as one of the most complete examples of Georgian urban architecture in England. Originally constructed around seventeen forty-five for a merchant, the building was purchased in seventeen fifty-nine by Charles Gregory Fairfax, the ninth Viscount Fairfax of Emley. He engaged the prominent architect John Carr to remodel the interior as a winter home and a dowry for his only surviving child, Anne Fairfax.
