York Castle Museum is recognizable by the austere, limestone-fronted buildings of the former eighteenth-century prison complex, which stand in the shadow of the medieval Clifford’s Tower. Founded in nineteen thirty-eight, the museum repurposed a former debtors' prison and a female prison to house an extraordinary collection of social history gathered by a local physician named Doctor John Lamplugh Kirk.
