Micklegate Bar - Proof of York

Micklegate Bar is the most significant of the four medieval gateways into York, recognizable by its four-storey stone gatehouse and the two small, battlemented towers that flank its front. Dating back to the twelfth century, this structure served as the traditional ceremonial entrance for monarchs arriving from the south. By long-standing custom, kings and queens would stop at the gate to ask the Lord Mayor of York for formal permission to enter the city.
