The Bar Convent sits on Blossom Street, easily spotted by its plain Georgian brick facade that hides a complex history behind an unassuming exterior. Established in sixteen eighty-six, it is the oldest surviving Catholic convent in England. When it was founded, Catholic practices were strictly prohibited by law, forcing the resident sisters to operate in complete secrecy. They often disguised themselves as ordinary widows and ran a school for girls to maintain their presence in the city while avoiding persecution.
