Shambles

The Shambles is defined by its narrow, winding path and timber-framed buildings that lean so closely together that the upper stories sometimes appear to touch. While the street today is a public thoroughfare, it was historically known as the Great Flesh Shambles, a name derived from the Anglo-Saxon word for the wooden shelves where butchers once displayed their meat.
