The York Roman Bath Museum is housed in the basement of a public house on Saint Sampson’s Square, identifiable by the name of the establishment above ground. This site protects the remnants of an ancient military bathhouse, or caldarium, which served soldiers stationed at the Roman fortress of Eboracum. Builders first discovered these ruins in nineteen thirty while working on the construction of the building that replaced the former Mail Coach Inn.
