Merchant Adventurers' Hall

museum

The Merchant Adventurers' Hall on Fossgate is the largest timber-framed building in the United Kingdom still used for its original purpose. You can identify the site by the pale yellow walls, black structural timbers, and the massive red-brick chimney stacks that rise above the street. Construction began in thirteen fifty-seven, when a group of merchants formed a religious fraternity to support traders struggling in the wake of the Black Death.
