St Crux

St Crux on Pavement street is defined by its role as a parish hall that houses the ghost of a medieval church. While the original structure, first recorded in the Domesday Book, was once among the finest in York, its decline in the nineteenth century led to a controversial decision to demolish it. The building was so remarkably sturdy that crews had to resort to using dynamite to bring down its Italianate tower in eighteen eighty-seven.
