St Michael Le Belfrey

St Michael le Belfrey stands as a low, squat presence just south of York Minster, distinguished by its prominent bell tower above the west door. Built between fifteen twenty-five and fifteen thirty-seven, this Tudor Gothic structure is the largest parish church in the city. It replaced a medieval predecessor that had fallen into such disrepair that parishioners feared entering for services. Master mason John Forman oversaw the construction in one continuous build, leaving behind a church that remains the only one in York erected entirely within the sixteenth century.
