Bootham School occupies an elegant cluster of Georgian buildings set along the street of the same name. Founded by the Religious Society of Friends in eighteen twenty-three, it remains an independent Quaker school that prioritizes independent thought and social conscience over traditional academic pressure. The school moved to its current site in eighteen forty-six, centering on number forty-seven, a residence built in seventeen fifty-three by the architect John Carr.
