Roman column in Minster Yard

The Roman column in Minster Yard is a nine-and-a-half-meter-tall gritstone monument that stands opposite the south front of York Minster. It is a single, cylindrical survivor of sixteen similar columns that once supported the roof of the headquarters basilica for the Roman fortress of Eboracum. This basilica was a massive structure that reached the same height as the current cathedral’s nave.
