St Denys's Church, York

St Denys's Church on Walmgate is recognizable by its unusual, truncated shape, which gives it the appearance of a building that has been cut short. While it was once a much larger medieval church, structural failures forced its contraction over the centuries. Parts of the building subsided after the draining of a nearby royal fishpool, and further damage occurred during the construction of a sewer. These events, combined with the loss of its original nave and transepts, left the church as essentially the east end and its flanking chapels.
