St. Leonard's Hospital

The ruins of St. Leonard's Hospital are marked by an open, rib-vaulted undercroft with octagonal stone pillars. Located near the Museum Street entrance to the Yorkshire Museum Gardens, these remnants are all that survive of what was once the largest medieval hospital in northern England. Founded in the tenth century and later rebuilt after a major fire in eleven thirty-seven, the institution functioned as a self-sufficient complex that provided care for the sick, the elderly, and orphans.
