The Guildhall York

The Guildhall rises from the north bank of the River Ouse, distinguished by its medieval stone frame and a vaulted main hall supported by ten massive oak pillars. Originally constructed between fourteen forty-nine and fourteen fifty-nine, the building served as a meeting place for the city’s powerful merchant guilds. These groups controlled trade and commerce, and their control was such that they split the construction costs equally with the city corporation.
