Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma Gate

Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate is the shortest street in York, distinguished by its brevity and a name that has puzzled residents for centuries. It exists as a small, raised stone pavement running past the St Crux Parish Hall, connecting Colliergate to the junction of Pavement and Fossgate. The street is rarely more than eighty feet long, a compact space that once formed part of a much tighter, more congested medieval network before the demolition of neighboring houses around seventeen fifty.
